What Is Acupuncture?

In a nutshell, acupuncture is the insertion of filiform, sterile, single-use needles into specific parts of the body to elicit a healing response.  The points are located along certain connective tissue planes and/or intra or inter muscular landmarks. Depending on your condition, and the diagnostic work up of the practitioner, dictates where the needles are inserted.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

I always like to explain both the Eastern and Western mechanisms for how acupuncture works. Let’s not forget that this medicine is thousands of years old, and has stood the test of time. The way it is practiced today is very similar to how it was practiced thousands of years ago. And back then, they didn’t have MRI machines or blood panels to monitor all the physiological events that occur when a needle is inserted into the body. Their understanding of the body correlated to their understanding of nature and our environment— and the laws that govern nature also govern us. So if there is stagnation in nature, there is pathology, so the idea that if there is stagnation or blockages of our vital life force (or Qi) there is pain and pathology.
 
From a more Western standpoint, we now know that acupuncture has been proven to elicit a myriad of physiological responses in the body. Acupuncture elicits a response from the nervous system when certain points are needled which then triggers secretion of Beta-endorphins and Enkephalins. Otherwise known as your bodies naturally occurring opioids. This is why acupuncture is so beneficial at treating all types of acute and chronic pain. There have also been studies to show that acupuncture treatment involves numerous signaling pathways, inflammatory mediators and receptors involved in many bodily processes including: hormonal regulation, inflammatory response, sensory perception, detoxification and circulation.
 
I geek out over the science around acupuncture, so feel free to ask me questions! I’m going to assume that not everyone wants me to elaborate on the extensive research that is out there regarding the efficacy of acupuncture but I am happy to talk further about it during your treatment time.

Are There Any Side Effects to Treatment?

Just better sleep, better digestion, and a greater sense of calm!
 
But seriously –
 
Sometimes the points can bruise or feel sore after treatment. If we are dealing with stubborn musculoskeletal pain, sometimes you can feel little bit sore for 24-48 hours after a treatment. I always recommend lots of water, and paying attention to how your body responds to the treatments so that we can make sure your treatments are appropriate and we are getting the progress we want.

How Long Are The Appoitments?

New patient appointments are thorough and there’s a lot of intake that happens during this appointment so that Dr. Lindsay can get a full picture of your health and work up a treatment plan that includes acupuncture, herbs, diet and lifestyle recommendations. This generally takes 60-90 minutes, depending on how complex the condition. Follow ups are 45-60 minutes.

How Long Will It Take to Notice Results?

Depends on the condition. Generally speaking, acute conditions can improve in 3-4 treatments, and chronic conditions can take 12 or more treatments. Everyone is different in how they respond so we take it week by week and re-evaluate as needed.

When Should I Schedule My Treatments If I Am Planning On Doing IVF?

When preparing to go through IVF, the research shows that 3 months of a full Traditional Chinese Medicine approach (acupuncture, herbs, lifestyle, diet) yield the best outcomes. It may also be recommended to come in more than once a week when you start your Stim drugs or if you are over 40 years old. Acupuncture should be administered the day before and the day of your embryo transfer then weekly sessions until week 13 of gestation.

Does Insurance Cover Acupuncture? If so, How Much?

We can check your benefits! We recommend checking with your insurance provider to see if you have coverage first. Dr. Lindsay is currently in network with BlueCross BlueShield. Depending on if you have a deductible, you may just be paying a co-pay. Some insurance companies will dictate what conditions they will cover and if you don’t have any of these billable conditions (usually pain related) then you will be asked to pay the time of service price.
